Shaw AFB Facts

Shaw AFB is located west of Sumter, South Carolina. Shaw Air Force Base is about 40 miles east of Columbia, the state capital. The base is centrally located in the State of South Carolina with many points of interest within a reasonable driving distance. The Atlantic Ocean is 2 hours away with miles of beach available for vacation and recreational activities. Shaw Air Force Base ranks as one of the oldest installations in the Air Force and is the home of the 9th Air Force Headquarters, United States Air Forces Central (USAFCENT), and the 20th Fighter Wing and is the largest combat F-16 fighting wing.

The cost of living for Columbia, the largest city near the city of Sumter, as compared to the rest of the country is 18.42% lower than the U.S. average. However, the unemployment rate of Sumter Metro area is 13.7%. The median household income is $38,722.

The Carolina Pines Inn provides temporary housing for all incoming soldiers and airmen arriving at Shaw AFB. Reservations may be made for members on orders by calling the lodging office at 803-895-3803 or 803-895-3802.

There are three major housing areas on Shaw Air Force Base (AFB), primarily consisting of three and four bedroom houses; Shaw Heights, Palmetto Heights, and Dogwood Place. Shaw Heights has primarily two-story detached homes, Palmetto Heights has primarily two-story duplex homes, and Dogwood Place has reserved housing for select key and essential resident families. There are two elementary schools located on Shaw AFB. They are Shaw Heights Elementary and High Hills Elementary School. Shaw Heights Elementary School serves grades 2-3 for base residents. First grade students on base will attend Oakland Primary School, located conveniently just outside the gate in Sumter. Other Shaw/Sumter area children living off base in grades Kindergarten through 12 are serviced by schools in Districts 2 and 17. The Sumter School District office can be reached at 803-469-6900.

The 20th Medical Group provides ambulatory, medical and dental services to USARCENT Soldiers, in addition to the 20th Fighter Wing, Headquarters 9th Air Force and associate units. It is an outpatient clinic with 24-hour ambulance transport service. Direct outpatient care is provided for pediatrics to geriatric clients in an ambulatory setting. Patients represent all eligible beneficiaries: active duty and their family members, retirees and their family members and secretary designees. To schedule an appointment call 803-895-2273.

Shaw AFB has no emergency services. For on-base emergencies call 911 for an ambulance. The ambulance service transports patients directly to the Emergency Department at Tuomey Medical Center Emergency Room located in Sumter.
