Major General Gary H. Cheek currently serves as the Deputy Commanding General of Third Army, US Army Central (USARCENT), Coalition Forces Land Component Command (CFLCC).

MG Cheek graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1980. His first duty assignment was with the 1st Battalion, 13th Field Artillery (203mm, SP), 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga. He served as a Battery Fire Direction Officer, Battery Executive Officer, and Battalion Fire Direction Officer.

After the Officers Advanced Course, MG Cheek was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 28th Field Artillery (155mm, SP), VII Corps Artillery, Ansbach, Germany. He served as the Battalion Fire Direction Officer, Assistant S-3, and Commander of Battery A. He next served as an Instructor in Gunnery at the Canadian Field Artillery School at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown, New Brunswick. Canada. After attending the Command and General Staff College, he served as a Plans Officer in G-3, 24th Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia and as the Executive Officer of 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery (155mm, Paladin).

MG Cheek then served as the Field Artillery Branch Representative at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. He then returned to Fort Stewart to command 1st Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, (155mm, Paladin), 3rd Infantry Division. After command, he served as the Senior Fire Support Trainer at the National Training Center. After attending the United States Army War College at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., he assumed command of the 25th Infantry Division Artillery and subsequently deployed to serve as the commander of Combined Task Force Thunder as part of Combined Joint Task Force 76, Afghanistan.

He then served on the Joint Staff as the chief of the Strategic Planning Division, War on Terrorism Deputy Directorate, J-5 Plans and Policy and then on the Army Staff as the Deputy Director, U.S. Army's Strategy, Plans, Policy and Joint/International Affairs Directorate. Following his assignment to the J-5he was assigned as the Assistant Surgeon General for Warrior Care and Transition/Commanding General, Warrior Transition Command, Falls Church, Virginia. Prior to assuming his current position, MG Cheek was the Director, Military Personnel Management, G1, United States Army, Washington, DC.

MG Cheek is a graduate of the Field Artillery Officer's Basic and Advanced Courses, the Canadian Instructor in Gunnery Course, the Command and General Staff College, the School of Advanced Military Studies, and the U.S. Army War College to include the Advanced Strategic Arts Program. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with four Oak Leave Clusters, The Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with campaign star, the Parachutist Badge, Combat Action Badge, Ranger Tab, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge and the Army Staff Identification Badge.

Major General Cheek is married with two children.
