COL Robert G. Cheatham Jr., is a 1985
graduate of the University of Virginia ROTC program. Upon
completion of the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Ft. Sill,
Oklahoma, COL Cheatham was assigned to the 9th Infantry Division,
Fort Lewis, WA, where he served as a Company Fire Support Officer,
Battalion Ammunition Officer, Fire Direction Officer, Firing
Battery Executive Officer, and Assistant S3 Officer in the 1st
Battalion, 84th Field Artillery. After attending the Armor Officer
Advanced Course, COL Cheatham was assigned to the nuclear capable
1st Battalion, 15th Field Artillery, 2nd Infantry Division,
Republic of Korea. During his tour, he served as the Battalion Fire
Support Officer of the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry and as a
Battery Commander. After completing a Masters Degree at Indiana
University in 1994, COL Cheatham was assigned as an Action Officer
in the Joint Staff, J- 5's forward office in the US Mission to the
Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Vienna,
Austria. After this posting, COL Cheatham was assigned as the
Exercise and Programs Officer in the US Central Command's US
Liaison Office, Doha, Qatar, Persian Gulf, from 1996 to 1998.
Following attendance at the US Army's Command and General Staff
College in 1998-1999, he reported to the 1st Armored Division
Artillery where he initially served as the Division Fire Support
Planner in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, then serving in succession as
the Battalion S3 Officer of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery,
Giessen, Germany, deploying to KFOR2A in 2000, and then as the
Division Artillery S3 Officer in Baumholder, Germany. COL
Cheatham's next assignment was as the ACofS, G3 and then Chief of
Staff of the V Corps Artillery where he served in Operation IRAQI
FREEDOM, 2003- 2004. COL Cheatham next assumed duties as the Chief
of Training, ACofS, G3, V Corps, from 2004-2005. COL Cheatham
commanded the 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery, 2005-2007, to
include an OIF deployment in 2005-2006. COL Cheatham then assumed
duties as the Chief of Operations, DCofS, G3, US Army, Europe &
7th Army, in May, 2007 thru June 2009. COL Cheatham graduated from
the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in June 2010.
COL Cheatham's awards and decorations
include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (1 OLC), Defense
Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal, Army
Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (1 OLC), Armed
Forces Expeditionary Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign
Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on
Terrorism Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, NATO Medal,
Combat Action Badge, and the Parachutist Badge.
COL Cheatham is married and has two
daughters.
