(March 4, 2009) - The Department of the Army
confirmed details today of the Department of Defense's announcement
to deploy the 82nd Airborne Division (All American) Headquarters
and 4th Brigade Combat Team (Cobras), 4th Infantry Division to
Afghanistan as part of a normal rotation of forces. The scheduled
rotation for these forces will begin in late spring.
The headquarters of the All-American Division will relieve the
headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division's Screaming Eagles, and
the 4th Infantry Division Cobras will relieve the 3rd Brigade
(Dukes) Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One).
The Army will provide only the best led, best trained, and best
equipped forces possible to the combatant commander for operations
in Afghanistan.
When America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, President George W.
Bush called upon the American military to fight global terrorism.
All-American Soldiers deployed to Afghanistan and the Central
Command Area of Responsibility to support combat operations.
All-American Soldiers and units have continued to support the
operations in Afghanistan through 2002 to 2008, with battalion and
brigade combat team deployments varying in length from four to
fifteen months.
In January 2007, the division headquarters deployed to
Afghanistan on a scheduled rotation in support of Operation
Enduring Freedom, and returned to Fort Bragg in April 2008.
The 4th Brigade Combat Team (Cobras), 4th Infantry Division,
officially activated as one of the U.S. Army's first modular
brigades as part of an Army-wide restructuring and transformation
process, or "future force," on Dec. 16, 2004.
Led by the unit's first commander, Col. Michael F. Beech, and
brigade command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Major John E. Moody
Jr., the unit fully manned, equipped, and trained approximately
4,000 Cobra Soldiers in less than one year, and deployed with the
rest of the 4th Infantry Division in support of Operation Iraqi
Freedom in late November 2005. Upon redeployment to Fort Hood in
December 2006, the brigade immediately started training for future
missions.
